Clipped-down two-hook

A flapper made aerodynamic. Each hook clips into an impact shield for the cast, so baits stay intact and the rig flies further.

What you need

Rig body
1.3m of 60–80lb mono
Top
Size 4 rolling swivel
Droppers
2 × size 10 swivels with beads and crimps
Clips
2 × impact shields (or bait clips) with crimps
Snoods
25lb, cut to length on the rig
Hooks
Size 1/0–2/0
Bottom
Breakaway lead link, 5–6oz grip lead

Build it

  1. Tie the top swivel to the rig body.
  2. Make the upper dropper (crimp, bead, swivel, bead, crimp) about 10cm under the top swivel.
  3. Thread a crimp and impact shield about halfway down the body, opening upward. This holds the top hook.
  4. Make the lower dropper just under that shield.
  5. Fit the second shield just above where the lead link will sit, then tie on the lead link.
  6. Tie snoods long, hook on, then trim each until the hook sits in its shield with the snood only just taut. Crimp everything in place.
  7. Bait up, with the bait pointing up the rig, and seat each hook bend in its shield.
On the beach

If the hooks spring out on the cast, the snoods are too short. If they stay clipped on the seabed, they're too long and the shield is gripping the bend: trim 1cm and retest.

Knots for this rig are in Knots. Line strengths, hook sizes and weights are starting points: scale them to your tackle, the ground and the tide. Diagrams are schematic and not to scale.
