Uptide rig

Cast away from the anchored boat, uptide. The grip lead holds the bottom and a bow of line forms. When a fish takes, it pulls the lead free.

Build it

  1. Thread the slider onto the line, then add a bead and tie on the swivel.
  2. Tie the trace to the swivel and add the hook.
  3. Clip the grip lead to the slider.
  4. Cast uptide at about 45 degrees from the bow and let out enough line to form a bow.
On the beach

When the rod tip springs back, the fish has pulled the lead free. Wind fast until you feel weight, then lift. A pier or light uptide rod is ideal here.

Knots for this rig are in Knots. Line strengths, hook sizes and weights are starting points: scale them to your tackle, the ground and the tide. Diagrams are schematic and not to scale.
